The Trust is thrilled to endorse a wonderfully entertaining and educational poetry book written by our NSS Cancer Pathway GP Lead, Dr Hannah Weston-Simons.

‘Blood, Bones & Bladders: The Poetry of Your Body’ is a collection of fun, informative poems that tell children aged 6-11 how our organs, blood and bones keep us alive and well.  The beautifully illustrated characters come to life on the page to reveal weird and wonderful facts about the human body whilst supporting the primary school curriculum.

Before her NHS career and studying medicine, Dr Hannah graduated from university with an English degree. She is passionate about children's literature, and has always loved poetry. Now, she has combined her interests and expertise to create this delightful poetry collection.

Dr Hannah said “I have always loved poetry and rhymes, and actually did a degree in English Literature before deciding that I wanted to be a doctor.  I genuinely feel that most things are more interesting in rhyme and thought that it would be a great medium to use to explain anatomy to kids.  The human body is so fascinating, and I hoped that making the organs all into little characters to explain their roles would be a fun way for children to learn more about it.

I had the idea for the book about two years ago, and have four children of my own who have very kindly been sounding boards for me to try the rhymes out on!  It is so lovely to finally see it in print!”

When away from work and with her book in hand, Dr Hannah is delivering talks at local primary schools to enhance students’ learning.

The book can be purchased via www.bloodbonesandbladders.co.uk or via Amazon, here.

Well done, Dr Hannah, we can’t wait to see what’s next for you!
