Dartford and Gravesham NHS Trust (DGT) is proud to congratulate our team based at Queen Mary’s Hospital for successfully performing the Trust’s first day case major joint arthroplasty (knee replacement surgery).
Following months of planning and collaboration, the advanced surgery allowed the eligible patient to be discharged on the same day when traditionally, this may result in a 1-3 day hospital stay.
Benefits of day case arthroplasty include:
- Improved patient experience – many patients prefer to recover in the comfort of their own home, surrounded by loved ones, leading to increased satisfaction
- Early mobilisation – same day discharge encourages patients to move sooner, reducing the potential risk of any post-surgery complications as a result of being immobile for a longer period of time
- Empowers patients – same day discharge allows patients to take a more active role in their recovery as our teams work with them to manage their own pain management and physiotherapy exercises prior to going home
Trish Bannister, General Manager said: “I would like to thank all of the staff for their hard work and engagement. We had great patient experience feedback, which is testament to the positive progressive teamwork and that great patient outcomes can be achieved with optimisation of resources.”
Mr Sivaprakasam, Orthopaedic Consultant added: “Day case arthroplasty is the pinnacle of joint replacement surgery. We at DGT are very proud to have implemented this pathway for better patient outcomes.”
This development marks a significant achievement for our theatre teams, allied health professionals, nursing staff, medical teams and scheduling colleagues, who have successfully collaborated and achieve better patient outcomes. Well done to all involved!
