My name is Dora Affam, I am a Consultant in Acute Medicine working on Acute Medical Unit (AMU) and Ambulatory Emergency Unit (AEC) at Darent Valley Hospital since April 2018.
I am the Clinical Lead for Acute Medicine since January 2021. Since 2019, I have been the Training Lead responsible for the training and development for Medical Specialty Doctors who are working in the NHS for the first time at Registrar level with full MRCP. Through this programme, I have helped train these Doctors to high standards and they have been appointed for Medical Higher Specialty Training in various Deaneries.
I am a member of the Thrombosis committee. I have championed for a cultural shift and adherence to VTE risk assessment and prophylaxis in the Medical directorate and worked with the Surgical team in leading clinical audits/re-audits, teaching sessions for Junior Doctors and during ward rounds.
I am the Lead for Mortality and Morbidity (M&M) in Acute Medicine. I introduced M&M meetings as part of our Acute Medicine Department since 2018.
I am very passionate about maintaining my own wellbeing as well as promoting the wellbeing of my colleagues and patients.
I have led various clinical audits and clinical quality improvement including Staff to staff Appreciative Feedback initiative on AMU.
I have sought to understand more about Acute Hospital care for People with Learning Disability to improve clinical outcomes. I recently lead a masterclass on this with a team of Doctors from ED, Medicine, Learning Disability Nurse and Clinical Coding. This is to share learning and understanding to avoid diagnostic bias, consider reasonable adjustment and timely involvement of Learning Disability Nurse Specialist, and improve clinical coding.
