I qualified with a BSC in nursing in 1998 at the University of Surrey in Guildford and went straight into Accident and Emergency nursing. After working for a year I moved to Australia whereby I travelled and worked in multiple settings including outback/bush nursing for nearly 2 years before returning to the UK. I then spent 17 years at University College of London Hospital Emergency department. In my time at UCH I undertook many post graduation courses to specialise in the Emergency setting including becoming an Emergency Nurse Practitioner which allowed me to work autonomously with certain clinical conditions. I then undertook an MSC in Advanced Nurse Practitioner swiftly followed by the Non- Medical Prescriber course to become an Independent Nurse Prescriber. This allowed me to practice as an Advanced Nurse Practitioner in both adults and paediatrics, which was highly challenging but thoroughly enjoyable. As such I am a member of both the Royal College of Emergency Medicine and the RCPCH.
Alongside this I have always maintained a keen interest in the resuscitative service and qualified as an ALS and APLS instructor in 2004 and 2006. My special interest is with clinical education and teaching and I have developed and set up several teaching programmes which are now well established in the ED for the development of junior staff. My interest in teaching has since progressed to include the development of the Emergency Nurse Practitioners and I work as a part time Nurse Lecturer at Middlesex University on a number of post graduate courses.
