Service Overview
Orthotics is a medical specialty that focuses on the design and application of orthoses. An orthosis is an externally applied device that supports or corrects the function of a limb or the torso, helping improve function and quality of life. The Orthotic Service provides prescription bracing to help people recover from or avoid injury or live with lifelong conditions. Access to the Orthotic Service is via either a Consultant or GP referral.
We run clinics at Darent Valley Hospital, Monday - Friday - Appointments Only, no walk-ins. We must have a referral before you can be seen.
The Orthotic Service at Queen Mary's Hospital is only open on Monday & Tuesday for appointments. If you need to contact the department, please send an e-mail, as this is checked daily by the Orthotic Service team at Darent Valley Hospital and is the quickest way to get a response. If you are collecting goods, please ensure the department is staffed before travelling to the hospital.
What to Expect
You will be sent an initial appointment. At this appointment the Orthotist will assess you (as they will need to see the affected area, it is helpful to wear or bring appropriate clothing), discuss your condition and decide on the most appropriate device. Simple devices may be available at the first appointment or measurements will be taken, if a device has to be tailor made. If necessary you will require follow-up appointments for fitting and supply.
Patients can only attend Orthotics with an in date referral. Referrals last one year and new referrals will be required every year. We do not accept walk-ins.
