Surgical Admission Lounge

Service Overview

The Surgical Admissions Lounge (SAL) is a dedicated area for preparing patients for elective or emergency surgery. It also supports patients recovering from day-care procedures before they are discharged. SAL ensures a smooth transition to surgery while prioritising patient safety and comfort.

What to Expect

Bring essential items, follow fasting instructions, and be prepared for potential wait times, as surgery schedules are based on clinical priorities. While visitors are not generally allowed, exceptions may be discussed with the Senior Sister, Ward Manager, or Nurse in charge. Staff will keep you informed throughout your theatre journey.

To ensure a smooth experience, please follow these guidelines:

What to bring:

  • A small, fastenable bag
  • All medications (including injections) in their original boxes/containers
  • Dressing gown and slippers
  • Denture/glasses care items (if applicable)
  • CPAP machine (if required for sleep apnoea)

What not to bring:

  • Valuables
  • Large sums of money (the hospital cannot take responsibility for these items)

Before arrival:

  • Remove all jewellery, false nails, nail varnish, and make-up.
  • Follow the fasting instructions provided.

On the day:

  • Be aware that arrival time does not guarantee your surgery time, as theatre schedules are prioritised based on clinical and nursing needs. Wait times may vary, but staff will keep you informed.
  • Bring reading material or something to occupy your time while waiting.

Post-surgery Updates:
Relatives or friends are encouraged to contact SAL approximately four hours after the patient has gone to theatre to learn which clinical area or ward they have been transferred to.
